What made you decide to study at MDS?
One of the main regrets in my life was not pursuing a creative career. I believe it's never too late to learn and so I decided to leave my career as a senior risk analyst and embark on a creative journey as a mature student. I chose the Bachelor of Media Design with Graphic Design as my major.
I wanted to study with the best, and after some research, it was clear to me that Media Design School was the most awarded and best regarded in not only New Zealand but also in the Southern Hemisphere.
Did you have any doubts when you were looking to start? How did you overcome them?
Oh yes, definitely, I was giving up my career and a well-paid job, and so there were some doubts. To ensure I was making the right decision I invested a year in self-study. I explored Design with a particular focus on Graphic Design. When I completed this exploration I knew it was the right direction for me to take.
How did the people in your life react to you choosing to study again?
Most of my friends and family were supportive of my decision to change careers. However, one friend told me I was crazy and not to do it. I knew it was the right decision because I was following my passion. I've learned over the years to measure my success in life by how happy I am and not by how much money I make.
What’s it like working with your peers, considering the average age of the students in the class?
I must admit there was some concern about my age before I joined Media Design School as a mature student. I was unsure if I would be accepted. I needn't have worried; my cohort have been great, friendly and accepting. Over the last couple of years, we’ve gotten to know each other. To my peers, I’m just one of the other students.
How do you feel studying at MDS is preparing you for industry?
MDS started to prepare me for industry from day one. The work is project based and is both solo and collaborative in nature. This approach is preparing me for the 'real world' because i'll be working with others in a team environment.
