Media Design School’s ‘Interception’ Wins Best VFX Short Film at ANFX Film Fest 2024

Media Design School is thrilled to announce that Interception, a Carbon Arc Studio production created with animation and visual effects by our talented students, has won Best Visual Effects Short Film at the inaugural ANFX International Film Festival.

Unlike student films, Interception is a professionally led project where our Bachelor of Art & Design (3D Animation & VFX) students work alongside industry pros, gaining real-world experience on a production designed to compete against other professionally produced films - a unique opportunity available only to MDS students.

Alongside this major win, we’re also celebrating two awards won by our student films: A Dragon In Name Only, co-directed by Jacynta Scurfield, who led a team of six classmates, and The Memory Emporium, with Director Michael Allred leading a crew of eight students, including Sam Potter, a member of the compositing team. These recognitions underscore the skill and dedication of our student body, many of whom go on to work on professional productions.

We really had a lot of fun making the film and it’s awesome to be honoured with this award. As usual, our students did an amazing job with the visual effects, so it’s especially rewarding to see the film recognised as Best Visual Effects Short Film in the festival. I can’t wait until Interception finishes its run on the international film festival circuit and we can share it online for the general public to enjoy. Keep an eye on Media Design School’s social media channels for a release date,” said Steve Dorner, Associate Dean & Programme Director for the Bachelor of Art and Design (3D Animation and Visual Effects)

A special thanks goes to the accomplished MDS faculty and staff who contributed to Interception, including Peter McCully, Ryan Mullany, and Tony Li, whose guidance plays an integral role in preparing our students for success in the competitive world of animation and visual effects. Congratulations to all involved!
